This is the final and longest stretch of our hike. Both ascent and descent were the most of the tour. The ascent to Martin Bush Hütte was very reasonable, though the air was getting pretty thin. Then came the climb to the Similaun Hütte, near the highest spot of the hike. We liked it up there for a few reasons not the least of which was that it marks the border of Austria and Italy and because, for this reason, the food was decidedly superior. The descent to Lake Vernagt (near Merano) was initially treacherous, then became quite walkable, in an endless kind of way. We walked the rest of the way with friends we met along the way. I have to say that Smadar is a natural speed goat. She hiked the entire trail without poles. So proud of all 3 of us for overcoming various challenges and hiking what we consider to be a beautiful and technically quite challenging trail. We were definitely not the youngest on the trail and will always treasure this time of our mostly good health, friendship, courage, and teamwork.

Our friend The High Roller … ask us about him. A story for another day.
