The long-awaited first day of our E5 alpine crossing is complete. We knew in advance that it would rain all day and so it did. We managed to hike 16.3 kms and feel pretty great that we did it. The first alpine hike is always a challenge.

It is hard to describe the number of waterfalls and full, rushing alpine streams on our way to the Kemptner Hütte (our half way point).

We often had to jump and hope for the best. Several times we had no option but to walk right underneath falls.

To say we were wet, might be an understatement. That said, our gear held up and after a few adjustments, we were comfortable for the crossing of the Austrian border.

Our descent was much easier than our way up. Rain eased up a little. Despite the rain, the hike was gorgeous. We even crossed a 200 m long suspension bridge, close to our destination of beautiful Holzgau.

Our hotel (Dorfstube) is fantastic. It has a dry room with lockers that have boot dryers in them.
We know that we will sleep well tonight.
Wonderful to read about your first hiking days, it sounds glorious, and it was great to see you smiling through the rain! Sleep tight in your cost hotel!
Bravo Florence
